Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise as just a young girl. Her aunt was an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art and literature, or even theater. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate by means of the medium of art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and raised. DuVernay's father remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma, and later directed an documentary on the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay was a college student at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned the task of watching the home and looking through the trash belonging to one of the juries. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding to not pursue journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in small production studios right out of high school. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. In addition to PR her agency also launched several marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
